Operation is simple: the pull rope is wrapped three or four times around the capstan drum and then passed under the throttle pulley. By pulling the rope, the engine accelerates, moving the load. If tension on the rope is reduced or stopped, the engine continues to idle, but the capstan remains stationary and the load is held in position. For controlled lowering of a load, the rope is released from the clamp; the load can then be braked via the winch and lowered safely.
